London's Big Ben has been bonging for 156 years, but it could all stop with a bang if repairs aren't carried out. The Great Clock, one of London's most famous tourist attractions, needs work to stop it falling silent. Politicians say the repairs could cost taxpayers up to 40 million pounds and would shut Big Ben down for up to 4 months.

"Big Ben and the Elizabeth Tower, which it's on top of, is an iconic image of the UK. It's the most famous iconic image of the UK, one of the most famous images anywhere in the world. It's part of the image of the country. The cross-party Commons Finance Committee's report says Big Ben has "chronic problems" with the bearings behind the hands and pendulum. There is also severe metal erosion, cracks in the roof and other defects.

Upgrades were also needed to bring the building in line with health and safety regulations.

The costs include plans to build a visitor centre at the bottom of the tower, and a lift to take tourists to the top.  In 1976, repairs saw the clock stopped for 26 days over nine months.

Many countries have a special day each year when they celebrate a “national day”.  This day is dedicated to the country’s founding or independence or even a special day for the ruler.  Usually these days are a national public holiday where everyone takes the day off from work.

America’s national day is called “Independence Day” and it is held every year on July 4.  This marks the signing of the famous document, The Declaration of Independence in 1776.  In France, the national day is on July 14.  This is the anniversary for the storming of the Bastille.  It is considered the start of the French Revolution.   Japan’s National Foundation Day is on February 11.  This is to honor the crowning of Jimmu, the first emperor long ago in 660 AD.

Some countries have several national days.  In Spain, for example, there are four national holidays.  However, a few countries do not have any national day.  This includes Denmark and the United Kingdom.  Recently, politicians in the United Kingdom hope for the establishment of a national day.
